If there was ever a reason to celebrate my best friend Missy Ayers, her 30th birthday is the reason. Since Tanglen Elementary this little “nug” has been my best friend. I think the term “best friend” is often times loosely used but in the case of Missy, BEST FRIEND is truly the only way to describe how I feel about her. Missy is the type of person that lights up a room and can become the best of friends with a perfect stranger in no time. This is evident in her over 1400 Facebook friends that she has. You know to always expect a memory and laugh with her even if you are just laying on the couch and talking. Her incredible zest for life is unmatched to anyone I have ever met and her dedication and love of her friends to this day blows my mind. Not in elementary school, certainly not in junior high and perhaps even not in high school was I aware of the impact that Missy has made on my life and on the lives of so many others. Six years ago Mis and I teamed up for a charity event, the Cystic Fibrosis Great Strides walk. Happily, I have worn the proud title of Team Leader of Team Missy but it is really Missy, like all things we do together who takes charge and makes “Team Missy” the success that it is today. The event is just a walk around lake Calhoun in early May each year, but its the support and turnout every year that continues to blow my mind. I realize that this support comes from the fact that so many people feel about Missy the same way that I do.
Missy was born with cystic fibrosis, a genetic disease that affects thousands of children and young adults. I have never really known if living with this disease has shaped the unbelievable person Missy is or if it’s just innate within her to be warm, kind and a wonderfully fun person. Either way, celebrating her 30th birthday was not only a milestone of all the wonderful advances this disease has seen over the years, but also to celebrate my best friend that I love so dearly.
Shameless Plug: TEAM MISSY has raised over $120,000 to fund vital research and assist in the rapid progress of finding a cure for CF. Please join us in walking 5k around Lake Calhoun on Saturday, May 7, 2011 in Minneapolis, MN.
